Summer Camp for Free?

I would like to quickly thank you for visiting this page and welcome you to what I hope is a great resource for information for anyone who reads this.

Free Summer Camp?  Sounds great doesn't it?  Well, it could possibly happen for us this year...and hopefully for years to come.  But how, might you ask?  That's a very good question.  When looking over different options to supplement the costs of Summer Camp there are a few options.  First, is the Annual Popcorn Fundraiser we do with the council.  Any Scout who has $1,200 in sales gets a free week of Summer Camp paid for by the Council.  We actually have 3 Scouts who achieved this amount and will be able to take advantage of this.  Other options include doing fundraisers that don't really offer a whole lot of promise and require weeks of work.

Then there is the option that we are going to pursue.  Let me preface this with some information.  We currently have 21 boys in Troop 16 and we are going to be doing some recruiting in the next few weeks.  So let's say we pick up 4 more boys and end up with 25 boys.  Then, let's say that all 25 want to attend camp, which costs $180.  This means that the total cost of Summer Camp is $4,500!  Sounds like a lot doesn't it!  And this doesn't include the other costs that we incur each year...pizza for the late night snack attack, gatorade for the week, etc.  So here is what we are going to do.  We have talked with the leadership of First Baptist Collinsville before about doing a lunch fundraiser before but we have never been able to work it out and then it gets forgotten. We also have a large group of boys in the Troop who attend Midway Baptist just down the road.  So we have proposed to BOTH churches to host a "Summer Camp Luncheon" in the next couple of months.  We are setting a goal of $2,300 in donations for each church.  This will allow us to hopefully be able to pay for everyone's summer camp, or at least a pretty hefty chunk of the cost. 

So, we will be hosting this luncheon at FBC Collinsville in March, and then at Midway in April.  We ask that every Scout attend at least ONE of these two events, or both if you are available.  The Scouts will be serving a lunch to the members of each church and the cost is donation only.  We will also have a slideshow of pictures from last year's Summer Camp up and will show the Summer Camp Promotional video once everyone is seated.  Hopefully, we will be able to get a few Scouts to get up in front of everyone and just tell a little bit about their Summer Camp experience from the past few years and why it is so important for them to be able to go each year.
